Hi All,

Welcome to this week’s quick tips email. As always, please forward this message to any of your archery friends who might find it helpful.

🏹 Technique tip

Last week I covered the 3rd major mistake many archers make when moving their sight, and today I’ll cover the 4th.

Mistake 4 – thinking your shot was good because it went in the middle

You might think the target never lies in archery, and it doesn’t. But how you read the target matters.

One of the biggest barriers to improvement is that many archers assume they did a good shot, just because the arrow went in the middle.

I’ve seen this so many times. Most often this appears in two ways:

  • If an archer makes a technique change and their group moves away from the centre of the target, they assume they must be doing something wrong.
  • If they shoot a group of arrows off centre, and 1 or 2 arrows in the middle, they assume the arrows in the middle are the good shots.

So what should you do? Pay attention to your grouping on the target, not where the arrows are going.

This is such an important point. Just because an arrow went into the 10, doesn’t mean it was a good shot. Grouping is the ultimate objective.

🛠️ Equipment tip

Regularly checking your tuning is important.

Each week, I always recommend my archers to shoot an 18m and 30m bareshaft to check their tuning.

This way you will notice more quickly if something has changed, and it’s a good habit to get into.

You’re not looking for perfect tuning every time. And your bareshaft location will vary slightly, but it should be similar each week.

This also helps you maintain a bow which is tuned well, even when you’re making technique changes.

💪 Training tip

It’s easy to get sidetracked when you’re shooting and lose focus. Over time this will limit your improvement.

Before your next training session, set yourself one area you want to learn something about. This will help you prioritize and get into a flow when you’re shooting.

As an example, you might want to work on your bow hand position. So your goal could be: “I’m going to work on placing my bow into the grip in a solid position with the goal of learning how to do this the same every single shot”.

🏆 Paris 2024

The Olympic archery competition is already underway and some great matches are yet to come.

In the men’s qualification round Kim Woo Jin ranked 1st again with 686, but the star of qualification was Lim Sihyeon who set a new world and olympic record in the women’s qualification round of 694.

Florian Unruh also had a great performance with 681 in windy conditions, and could definitely be one to watch in the individual matches…

Who’s your favourite to win in Paris?

That’s it for today, have a great weekend!

Happy shooting,

Ashe
