Archery Drills - Narrow Stance Drill

If you narrow your archery stance, it will challenge your upper body stability more. This drill does just that. It can be a challenging drill but it’s very useful to demonstrate the need to activate your core when you shoot. If you are leaning towards or away from the target this drill will be very hard, so it encourages good posture.  Technique is crucial to good posture, read more about the technical side of the recurve stance in our Recurve Archery Technique – Stance & Posture section.

Exercises are also an important part of learning correct body position, see our Recurve Archery Exercises section for ideas on what you can do in the gym to improve your archery.

Key Points

1.Stand with your feet on the shooting line touching each other, as demonstrated in the figure above.

2.Shoot your normal shot.

Note: You may need to modify your set or set-up stage slightly when you do this drill, this is normal.

Notes:

Because of the narrow stance, this can be quite a challenging drill. There are lots of ways to use this drill in training but it’s good to start at close blank boss first. Then, for the most benefit you can do this drill at your normal distance with a target face. A good drill is to score a round with the narrow stance, and then score a round with your normal stance. Maybe you can alternate foot positions every end or every arrow, there are many options with this drill.

Your general training should incorporate drills on a regular basis. For more general information on the basic principles of training, see our dedicated page: How To Train for Archery.
