Hi All, Welcome to this week’s ‘5 quick tips’ email. As always, feel free to forward this message to your archery friends.

🛠️ Equipment recommendation

This is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment you can buy. You’ll get more bang for your buck than almost anything else, and it should last you a lifetime. You need to get a tripod mount for your phone that allows you to video your shooting and help you self-coach. This one from Ulanzi is my favourite because it works with most phones and tablets, in both landscape and portrait. You can normally find Ulanzi on Amazon, Shopee, Coupang…etc.

🏹 Technique tip

Some archers feel that when they try and rotate into alignment, their head twists with the shoulders and they feel limited as to how much alignment they can get. This is often caused by turning your head too far to the target at the set position. We do want the head turned as far to the target as possible when you’re at full draw. But this doesn’t mean you need to turn as far as possible when you’re at the set position. This is because your shoulders are naturally open to the target at the set position, but at full draw they should be in good alignment. Take a video of yourself shooting and observe your head position before you raise the bow and when you’re at full draw. It should be turned the same amount in both positions.

🧠 Mindset

I enjoyed the recent Shanghai Archery World Cup coverage, and you can also use these scores to compete against in your training! In the same way as last week, pick a distance and target face size where you can keep 85%+ of your arrows in the gold. Then score a 12, 36, or 72 arrow ‘qualification’ round at that distance. You can then rank yourself in the elimination round using the official results book from the Shanghai World Cup and see how far you would get through the head-to-head brackets. If you scored a 12 or 36-arrow ranking round you’ll just have to multiply it to get the 72-arrow equivalent for your ranking round. note: the recurve qualification scores are on pages 32-35 and the elimination brackets are on pages 20-25.

💪 Try this in training

Try using a video delay app like this one (you’ll need a tripod mount for your phone or tablet 😜) to get quick, objective feedback on your technique when you’re training. Pick one thing to work on, and choose which video angle will be best to judge your progress. Then set your video delay app so you can evaluate each shot in training. This gives you more regular feedback and helps you improve faster. Just make sure you keep focussed on what you planned to work on, as it’s easy to get sidetracked with other parts of your technique. Do one thing at a time.

🎬 Cool video or podcast I’d recommend

I took this video of Brady and Steve practicing before a Gold Medal Match a few years back. It’s a great angle to see the draw scapula movement and how they expand through the clicker. That’s it for today, have a wonderful weekend! Happy shooting, Ashe
