Hi All,
Welcome to this week’s ‘5 quick tips’ email. As always, feel free to forward this message to your archery friends.
🛠️ Equipment recommendation
This week I’d like to talk about tungsten points vs stainless steel points for X10 arrows.
It’s tempting to think the tungsten points are better,
but for most archers, the stainless steel points are the best choice.
The only time I’d recommend against stainless steel points is if you regularly shoot on targets that are made of really hard material, especially if this is in strong crosswinds.
Otherwise, the stainless steel points have less wind drift (very slightly), and the price difference means you can buy a spare dozen and always keep your arrows with perfectly straight points in them.
🏹 Technique tip
I mentioned in one of my previous emails about spending a little more time at the set position. The bow hand position here is really key to get right, and I’d like to encourage you to make sure you’re feeling this consistent pressure point
on every single shot.
Scroll down to video 2 on the
Set Position page to see an example of what this should look like from multiple different angles.
🧠 Mindset
When was the last time you tried something in your training that you thought you might not be able to achieve?
When was the last time you made a massive amount of progress in your shooting?
Chances are, the answer to both these questions is the same.
Often, the times when you progress the most are when you try and do things outside your comfort zone.
It’s easy to fall into a habit of just shooting on the same day, with the same focus at the same distance. But this week
I’d like you to try a new training drill, a new technique focus, or a new scoring challenge that pushes you outside your comfort zone.
💪 Try this in training
Following on from the above, I’d encourage you to try the
Elbow Direction Drill which is an amazing way to train your expansion and improve your release. Or if you’ve tried that one before you could pick another drill from the
‘Drills and Bow Training’ page.
Simply get a fellow archer to lightly push an arrow against the back of your arm as you come into full draw and expand. This will give you a great sense of direction for your expansion and is one of my all-time favourite drills.
🎬 Cool video or podcast I’d recommend
A few weeks back I mentioned a great YouTube video on the anchor by the Korean Archery Association channel. They’ve just uploaded a
new version with professional English subtitles which you can watch here!
That’s it for today, have a wonderful weekend!
Happy shooting,
Ashe
