Hi All, Welcome to this week’s ‘5 quick tips’ email. As always, feel free to forward this message to your archery friends.

🛠️ Equipment recommendation

This week I’d like to talk about string material. I’ll keep it simple, if you shoot a W&W or MK bow and limbs I’d suggest Brownell FF+ or BCY 652 if you can’t get the Brownell. BCY 8125 or 8190 won’t be as forgiving for W&W and MK limbs in particular. If you shoot a Hoyt, either the Brownell FF+ or the BCY 8125/8190 works well. It’s more of a personal preference in this case. As for deciding between BCY 8125 vs BCY 8190, I’d generally recommend most archers go for the 8125. Next week I’ll talk about the number of strands…

🏹 Technique tip

The bow roll is an essential part of your technique, and I actually include this in my definition of ‘the release’ in the Release and Follow Through section of my website. Shown below, the double bow roll drill (filter the drills by ‘Release and Follow Through) is an amazing way to work on the bow side of your release. Simply shoot as normal but allow the bow to roll twice, whilst keeping your arm and body completely still. It’s particularly important to pay attention to keeping your bow arm height during the release, but also to direct your bow into the target and then down to the ground as it rolls. Pay attention to your index finger and thumb as the bow rolls, and feel like you’re pointing them to the ground during the follow-through. image

🧠 Mindset

Many archers have unhelpful mental scripts that are not helpful to them during competition. You probably have some of these too. Some examples might be:
  • “my first end of scoring is never good”
  • “I can only shoot well if the weather’s good”
  • “I’m not someone who performs well in competitions”
The next time you compete, I’d like you to just notice the unconscious thoughts that pop into your mind like this. Pay attention to these mental scripts. Once you’ve identified them you can begin to address them and replace them with something more helpful!

💪 Try this in training

Have you ever tried shooting at long distances, but with no target face? It’s one of my favourite training activities and one of the best ways to prioritise your technique feeling instead of aiming. Try doing this on alternating ends. So, one end with the target face, one with the blank, one with the target…etc. You might be surprised by your grouping on the blank target, and doing this regularly will allow you to more confidently commit to a smooth, fluid shot even when you shoot with a target face.

🎬 Cool video or podcast I’d recommend

Take a look at this 12-year-old video of Kim Woo Jin shooting at the 2011 World University Games. It’s very interesting to see what’s changed in his technique since then, and what’s still the same… That’s it for today, have a wonderful weekend! Happy shooting, Ashe
